On Effective Altruism

A friend of mine knew a philosopher who was miserably convinced that he should give up philosophy and become a banker so he could make a lot of money and donate it to the poor. This was a grim prospect — but inspiration struck! He could become a philosopher and convince his students to go into banking. A proto effective altruist I guess.
